Antidepressants not working? Try TMS.

What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, safe, non-drug treatment option for individuals who have not found relief after trying two or more antidepressant medications. TMS uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain associated with mood regulation and has helped many patients experiencing depression. NeuroStar TMS therapy is available at Claytor Memorial Clinic's Newport News and Roanoke, Virginia locations, providing convenient access to advanced depression treatment for patients throughout the region.

Insurance Coverage

Many patients may have coverage for NeuroStar® TMS Therapy through major commercial insurance plans and other participating providers. Coverage and eligibility requirements vary by plan. Our team can help verify your benefits before treatment begins.

How Does TMS Work?

With NeuroStar All You Have to Do Is Show Up.

During each session, a cushioned coil is precisely placed against your head while magnetic pulses deliver the therapy to the correct location that regulates mood in your brain.

You may feel a tapping, tingling, or warming sensation where the coil is positioned. This is temporary and typically subsides with subsequent treatments.

You will be awake and alert during the treatment and may resume regular activity immediately afterward.

NeuroStar has 0 common systemic side effects, allowing you to live life to the fullest.

NeuroStar is like physical therapy for the brain. It uses magnetic pulses, similar in strength to MRI, to reignite dormant connections in the brain and to give you control of your depression.

With NeuroStar you can live your life, on your terms.

Patients remain awake and alert throughout each appointment and can read, relax, or watch TV during treatment. Once the session is over, you can drive yourself home and return to your normal daily activities immediately.

Long-lasting

The benefits of TMS therapy often extend beyond the treatment period, with many patients experiencing lasting symptom improvement for up to a year after their sessions have ended.

NeuroStar TMS is a non-drug, noninvasive treatment that uses focused magnetic fields to revitalize underactive areas of the brain and improve symptoms of depression. At Claytor Memorial Clinic's locations in Newport News and Roanoke, NeuroStar TMS offers a safe, effective treatment option for people who have not found adequate relief from antidepressants.

NeuroStar uses focused magnetic pulses (similar in strength to an MRI) to revitalize underactive areas of the brain involved in regulating mood. When these regions are underactive, depression can result. "Waking up" these regions can have a lasting effect on depression, making long-term remission a reality for many people. Patients seeking NeuroStar TMS therapy in Newport News or Roanoke can meet with our team to determine whether treatment is right for them.

A typical NeuroStar treatment plan includes 36 sessions that each last between 19-37 minutes. Your doctor will determine what is right for you. Completing the full NeuroStar treatment course gives the best chance for delivering long-lasting relief from depression.

NeuroStar is covered by most major insurance plans, including Medicare and Tricare. Over 300 million people have insurance plans that cover NeuroStar. Our Newport News and Roanoke teams can help verify your coverage and answer any questions about insurance benefits before treatment begins.

NeuroStar is a safe and effective treatment without the systemic side effects often associated with medication. The most common side effect is mild to moderate discomfort at the treatment site, which typically subsides within the first week. Patients in Newport News and Roanoke who are looking for an alternative to antidepressant medications may benefit from a NeuroStar TMS consultation.

No. TMS Therapy involves a unique method of using pulsed magnetic fields for a therapeutic benefit. The intensity of the magnetic field is similar to that of an MRI. These techniques differ radically from the popular use of low intensity, static magnetic fields. Those products deliver weak and undirected static fields that are not capable of activating brain cells. The activation and stimulation of brain cells is a key part why TMS is so effective.
